Memorial Day Parade

The Town of Marlborough, in conjunction with American Legion Post 197 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5095, will present the annual Memorial Day Parade/Ceremony on Monday May 31 at 1:45 PM.
There will be a brief ceremony at the Marlborough Cemetery at 1:30 PM and the parade should step off at 1:45 PM from the Elmer Thienes/Mary Hall School and proceed down School Rd to South Main St, crossing Route 66 to Marlborough Town Hall where a ceremony will be held to honor our fallen veterans.
Weather permitting, there will be a flyover provided by the 103rd Airlift Wing as the parade approaches Town Hall.
Special guests/speakers will include Senator Mary Ann Handley, Representative Pamela Sawyer, Marlborough Selectmen Riva Clark and Joeseph Labella, and Iraq Veteran Richard Schadtle.
The bands participating will be the RHAM Middle and High School bands, Marlborough Jr Ancient Fife and Drum Corps, the Colchester Continental Fife and Drum Corps and Ct Valley Field Music.
Some of the marching groups will include Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department, the National Guard, VFW, American Legion Auxiliary and SAL, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Marlborough Martial Arts, Marlborough Soccer Club and MYAL.

There will be a Memorial Service for Tom Purtell (who recently passed away) at American Legion Post 197 (Route 66, Marlborough) on Saturday, June 26 at 2:00 PM. Refreshments and snacks will be served following the Service. Those planning to attend are asked to Contact Us at post197.com or call the Post at 860-295-7810.
Tom was the commander at the Post several times and was instrumental in it's foundation. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War.
Tom and his family lived in Marlborough for thirty years before moving to Goodyear Arizona eleven years ago.
He leaves his wife Sara, son Michael, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Jeff, and grandchildren Tyler and Tanner.

We regret to inform you that Past Commander and Charter Member of the Post, Stanley R. Robbins recently passed away. We will provide memorial details when they are available to us.

George F. Overbaugh of Marlborough (who passed away in August) and Stanley R. Robbins of Florida.

Past Commander Martin W. Clebowicz of East Hampton passed away unexpectedly on November 30, 2010, at the age of 62.
A gathering to celebrate Martin's life will be held at American Legion Post 197, 128 East Hampton Rd. (Route 66), Marlborough from 6-8 PM on Thursday, December 2, 2010. All are welcome.

The Post members would like to extend their sincere condolences to the families of Norman Sartre and Bill Richards who recently passed away. Both were long time members of Post 197.
John Henry Squier, 82, of East Hampton, passed away peacefully on Thursday (June 2, 2011) at Middlesex Hospital Hospice.
John was a longtime member of Post 197 and VFW Post 5095.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, (June 7th) at 11 a.m. in the Spencer Funeral Home, 112 Main St., East Hampton.
Friends may call at the Spencer funeral Home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

The Post members would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family of William A. Wilson, 67, of Marlborough who recently passed away. He was a long time member of Post 197.

Bruce John Smith, 1955-2010
Another member of the Post 197 family
has passed away. Bruce J. Smith has passed away after a short illness.
There will be a calling hours for Bruce on Thursday evening from 4-6:30 at Spencer's Funeral Home in East Hampton followed by a Funeral Service at 7:00 PM. A reception in his honor will be held at the American Legion in Marlborough at 8:00 PM.
Salvatore T. Santangelo 1934-2010
Salvatore T. Santangelo, long time member of the Post, passed away on Monday (Oct 4). He will be missed by many.
Friends and family may call at the Spencer Funeral Home on Wednesday (October 6, 2010) from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.
There will be a reception at the Post starting at Noon.

Muriel Nowsch Fuller 1931-2010
Muriel (Spencer) Nowsch Fuller died Saturday, (December 25, 2010) at Marlborough Health Care.

Past Commander John Lennart Johansson, 81, of Portland, beloved husband of Mary (Govone) Johansson, passed away on Sunday, (May 15, 2011) at Apple Rehab in Cromwell. The Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown is handling the arrangements.
Calling hours will be Friday, May 27 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Doolittle's Funeral Home.

Past Commander Bertrand Michaud
Past Cmdr Bertrand Michaud passed away suddenly on Saturday, 11/26.
Cmdr Michaud was an active member of the American Legion for the last 45 years and a charter member of Post 197, Marlborough. He held many offices and chairmanship from Post Commander to First District Commander to Area A State Vice Commander earning both State and National awards including Commander of the Year. He was very active in Child Welfare Programs, American Legion Baseball and a councilor and chairman for the Boy's State Program.
